Ok, so, I feel good (mostly!) about this direction for the medical alcove. I need to actually think about whether I want to use stroke as heavily as I do here (and whether I want to re-do all the other illustrations to cohere with this style: the fun of working on something as you learn is that... you want to go back and improve all the things that are "done!"). I'm using a grid now to make sure I have things lined up a bit better, and I'm attempting to make at least some attempt at a coherent perspective.
But here's an approach, with a massive thank you to folks like @geometric, @jpotterfield and @cain for giving me very practical advice (smaller palette, use of perspective, use of highlights, mids, darker tones) in—at the very least—making some improvements to my basic sense of composition!
This isn't to say "hey thanks, nailed it!" just... a genuine thank you for the advice and very kind help!
Next steps: more props, fixing the boring background, deciding if i want to re-draw everything else, lol.
