So over the past two years or so, a friend of mine has had the friend group watch like... A majority of the Lupin III movies and TV specials, so I'm coming at you today with my top picks out of the ones I've seen, since they can definitely be extremely hit-or-miss. Let's not get me started on The Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure. I heavily recommend never watching that one cause it's just gross. But if you're looking to get into Lupin and want a "must watch" list (in my opinion) here it is!

Let's start off with number 5! This one's probably the easiest watch, and the easiest to get a hold of.

5. The Castle of Cagliostro

It's very much a fun romp! Which is ideally what you'd want out of a Lupin III movie. An evil count, a princess in despair and only a gentleman thief to stop their arranged marriage. Very much a fairy tale plot, which might be a bit tired, but the gorgeous animation and charm of the characters really carries it. And of course since it's a Ghibli movie, there's many a plane. Very charming, light and fun. Definitely recommend the subbed version though since the relationship dynamics just feel a bit off to me personally in the dub.

4. Tokyo Crisis

If you want to see Lupin up against a corporate big-wig, this is the movie for you! Plus it gives Zenigata lots of space to shine. I was kinda eh on him as a stand alone character before seeing this one, but they really sold him here. Also, there's a funky water park chase. Alongside some genuinely touching moments.

3. Goodbye Partner

Some spicy drama between Lupin and Jigen! Rivalry! Longing glances! Set up against a plot that might fit better in the Fast & Furious franchise, but it's still an absolute blast throughout. A very modern take with all its positives and negatives. And surprisingly, classical music is extremely important to the plot.

2. Blood Seal - Eternal Mermaid

Lupin solves the mystery to immortal life! There's some surprisingly human moments in this movie that really make it for me, mixed in with the usual high packed action and hi-jinx you'd expect from a Lupin property. I'm a sucker for a folkloric mystery surrounding an object, so if that sounds cool to you, be sure to check this one out!

1. Walther P38

Ninjas! A secret island! This one's basically a Bond movie starring a silly little monkey man. There's drama, some gorgeous animation and a surprisingly captivating plot with some fun twists and turns. Peak Lupin to me honestly. Only thing to keep in mind is that the side cast is mainly side-lined in this one. But that does give Lupin plenty of room to shine and win your heart. Also his design in this movie is quite adorable.

This car chase from the Fuma Conspiracy is peak television to me. Nobody could do it better. (audio warning for loud car sounds to start)
