namely, corporate annual reports (JA to EN in my case) - not a glamorous job but someone needs to do it. while it might not have quite the same complexity of nailing a consistent and distinct tone for multiple characters in a fictional work, it still needs care in its own way.

For example, there are many terms for "technology for a vehicle that can drive on its own" (autonomous driving / self-driving vehicles / etc.) and some companies will have a preference for a specific term. Sometimes they will give you a list of specified terms, and sometimes the term in question will be included in the list, but other times you are left to fend for yourself and look through existing translations of materials from that company (which may or may not be consistent - best bet is to use a search engine on the company's site and go with the term that comes up more frequently)

This kind of stuff is generally done at short notice, so multiple translators need to work on it. Even with someone editing for consistency later, you can still see some slight variation in writing style if you take a close look at these reports. Usually, each year's report retains some of the previous year's text (which is taken out of the character count - the translators don't get directly paid to look at it, even though it's best to do so), but without care you can end up with a patchwork of marginally different writing styles (or at worst, inconsistent terminology) in the translation.
