oh god it's monday

Ratchet & Clank (PS2)

This was always my least favorite of the mainline PS2 R&C games, and I still feel that way after replaying it. It's a good foundation for what's to come, but the controls are pretty awkward and many of the planets are forgettable. It's kind of funny in retrospect that they do the "these guys HATE each other but they have to WORK TOGETHER and slowly BECOME FRIENDS" thing, I guess.

Dark Seed (PC)

Dark Seed has aged very poorly. None of the horror lands, and the strict, time-based execution is frustrating, unforgiving, and often illogical. I at least had fun with it as a collab game, including soft-locking ourselves because Kalmia spent all our money on olives. Mike Dawson is such a flimsy protagonist that he's great to laugh at as well. I understand why the Geiger art is the main reason anyone remembers this game.

UNSIGHED (PC)

I wanted to like UNSIGHTED a lot more than I did. The gameplay and dungeon design is pretty solid, and it was great to play a game with queer characters after all of the heterosexual retro gaming. The time mechanic is certainly an interesting concept to base a game around, but the stress of it ended up ruining the rest of the game. As a result, it's hard to say if I would have felt more from the plot without a constant timer urging me to ignore it. I'd definitely recommend giving it a go if you're into top-down Zelda type games, just turn the time mechanic off.

Escape from Bug Island (Wii)

This game fucking RULES. It's absolute kusoge. I loved every minute of it.

Billy Hatcher & The Giant Egg (GC)

Oh Billy, Billy boy... I don't have a ton of experience with Sonic Team's games, but this one felt like a culmination of every problem with their design philosophy -- frustrating and touchy mechanics, cruel level design, harsh penalties for death, and more! It certainly has its charms, though. There's absolutely no other game like it, and I think they could have made something a bit more loveable with a sequel. Also the theme song will be stuck in my brain until the end of time.
