i want to say “not really” but it’s actually pretty close to that. yeah, let’s say a more complicated IRC but with chat history and multimedia support.
I could totally see that working. We have discord "servers." Why not have actual discord servers?
yes, that was my actual motivation behind this. self-hosting and connecting to servers via a single protocol would be a neat thing, would encourage third-party clients by design, allow for accepting new changes to the backend at the hosters’ own pace, and would allow for extra extensibility. without most first-party infrastructure costs.
this should be a thing, in my opinion.
