this shit is fucking wild. this is what we should be doing with computers.
it compressed a 10.6MB PNG image down to 1.1MB without noticable quality loss. this is massive. and i mean the image originally had a grainy texture plus a gradient, that's why it was hard to compress. and the fact that JXL does nearly a tenfold size decrease? fucking massive.

inb4 this is the next big thing on the web, very hyped.

I’ve personally used imagemagick to compress the image, currently on the latest stable Ventura version. GIMP also can export/import JXLs, but only exports them losslessly. Magick by default does “lossy” compression, but i honestly can’t even call it “lossy” since the quality loss literally is not visible unless you zoom in.

Some stats:
L0 PNG: 16MB
L9 PNG: 10.6MB
Lossless JXL: 6.3MB
Lossy JXL: 1.1MB
