i used to browse reddit a whole ton before july, usually to just pass the time on my phone. and now after the APIcalypse - i just have 4 apps. telegram, discord, youtube and cohost.
rambling warning below the underline.
first doesn’t really bring a whole lot of content, but if i subbed to any more channels, i wouldn’t be able to hold the flood of content and would begin my descent into the 6194 Unread Messages pit.
second is… rather annoying, unless you’re having an active meaningful conversation with somebody. and tends to be quiet for most of the time, since i’m only active on 1 server, for the most part.
third is usually for long-form content for me, which doesn’t mean that i take in a lot of information at once, but one more focused stream of information instead.
and the fourth is… you know how it is here. i keep up with everything i can on here, which means i run out of New Interesting Things frequently.
reddit had that something going for it, a place where you had tons of communities, each posting about Their Own Thing as groups. i go on the news sub, i get news. i go on lgbt subs, i get lgbt content. i go on data visualisation subs, i get data visualisation content. i go on the laughing-at-rightists subs, i get laughing-at-rightists content. simple as, neatly ranked by the members of said communities.
and it worked, for the most part! it was good to use with apollo, and it’s been a way to spend time, by checking on What Was Happening On The Internets every morning/evening.
but now that it’s gone, it’s about 2-3h freed from my usual schedule. you might think “oh but you have more time for other things”, but honestly. i’m back from an evening run, my legs hurt, it’s past midnight and i want to just see whatever happened today, before i go to sleep. and i can’t do it now. there aren’t any good established alternatives where i can get community-curated links in one place.
sad, but that’s how it is. i’ll stop complaining once i get used to the lack of it. hell, i’ve started listening to podcasts way more actively now, instead of using reddit! though, i only do that outside, i just can’t find myself listening to them at home. there are too much things for my single-threaded brain to focus at when in my home, instead of understanding the voices in my headphones.
sorry, rambling a bit. but that’s how it is.
