just my 2 cents.
i think the touchbar was good actually, and it only failed because it was included on Pro macbooks, which less people have, so less developers were incentivised to make touchbar interactions in their apps. this could be fixed if the touch bar was included in the Air macbooks too.
i mean, how often do you even use F-keys on a mac? i only use them for volume and backlight controls, and that's not often too. and then having modularity? sign me up. except the "signing up" part will set you back 20 benjamin franklins.

while that sounds good, the problem is physical space. trackpad space is non-negotiable. keys cannot be shrunk. there is no space above, due to the speaker array.

i’m sure it could be better as-is with software changes, such as customisation as a mix of F-keys and functions both.
