one of the greatest innovations in lesbian fiction over the past few years has been in the field of representing the effects of oppression without reproducing it. to accomplish this task, lesbian authors have developed a new archetype of lesbian who lives in a non-homophobic society and is open about her sexuality, but thanks to other fictional circumstances is closeted about every other aspect of her personality, such as her ordinary likes and dislikes and the mere fact of her human limitations (for examples, see harrowhark nonagesimus of tamsyn muir's the locked tomb & adora sheraandtheprincessesofpower of nd stevenson et al's she-ra and the princesses of power.) in spite of its relative youth, this technique's remarkable economy of expression has made it highly successful. though it has yet to see widespread use in stories featuring protagonists bearing other queer identities, i have no doubt that it will prove similarly effective across the whole of our community
