Not to tumble down an existential hole at 7am but a really clarifying moment for me in the Trump presidency--among many others!--was realizing that to Republicans on a national level, California struggling to contain wildfires is hilarious and validating.
A large part of the state is red, and the red areas are deep red. Many of the areas most affected by wildfires are deep fucking red. But the point of callous, pointed inaction isn't just to prove that CA's government is inept, which would at least be politically coherent--it's to establish that the entire state is enemy territory. It's good if your enemies burn.
