Why do games media layoffs keep happening?

if y'all were/are on games media Twitter you might've been aware that Khee Hoon Chan was working to put together an absolute beast of a freelance article, interviewing loads and loads of folks hit by layoffs throughout the last year. the pitch eventually found a home with GI.biz and is out now! it's a great read for anyone in the gaming space and I hope it paints a clearer picture of the struggles journalists face for those on the outside looking in — keeping in mind that even this is only scratching the surface. I too am extremely frustrated with the current state of games writing, as a lot of my independent work will show, but the conversation needs a lot more education and nuance than it has now
