Although period movies typically represent past internet dwellers with a High Academic, Geocities Pastoral, or leetspeak accent depending on setting and context, there were actually many distinct accents in circulation. Cyberlinguists have documented differences across individual Usenet groups and fora.

It's believed that if an ancient World Wide Webizen were alive today, they would find homogeneity of accents most striking compared to their time. A well-traveled ancient would also likely be able to identify at least some vestiges of accents from their own time in modern accents, including the Something Awful accent which became widespread through Twitter and the Parent Who Doesn't Understand Computers accent which became extremely widespread on Facebook.
