(hello welcome to what happens when I do not have a character limit!!)

I've been making a list of fictional games that are depicted in film & tv, with at least some footage of the game being played. Here it is I gift it to you for whatever interest you may or may not have in this.

It covers video games, board games, sports, virtual reality, physical games, folk games, etc. I categorized them by the main way the game is used in the film/show, such as "Trapped in the Game" and "Win or Die" (my personal favorite, as you can probably see from all the ones I marked as already seen). Categorization is a bit inaccurate at times, but I expect to update them and I watch more. I have seen 65 of the 169 (nice) entries. Note, there are spoilers in this list that you can filter out with the last column, and recommend being careful unless you are okay with some huge surprises.

There's some really fun ones in here, but I'm going to skip the obvious ones in favor of the outliers I hadn't heard of before.

There's some real great "lmao Hollywood does video games" classics in here that I cannot believe I missed:

"A demonic wizard challenges a modern-day computer programmer to a battle of technology vs. sorcery, with the programmer's girlfriend as the prize." The Dungeonmaster (1984)

This one I will probably love, and is the only one with the style of "Borgesian" because I couldn't find a better phrase:

"A man awakens to find himself immersed in a real-life scenario of a board game with an ever expanding cartography." Snakes & Ladders (1980)

This one is a drama filmed like a documentary, about finishing a loved one's creative work:

"The French computer programmer Laura inherits the task of making a computer game of the Battle of Okinawa during World War II." Level Five (1997)

Here's a mockumentary from 2013 that is incredibly prescient. I hate it. I can't wait to watch it:

"The Berlin city goes crazy for a new smart phone app which allows users to play the Super Mario Bros game in Augmented reality and win Bitcoins by playing." The 1Up Fever (2013)

And an actual documentary, or so I assume:

"An evil video game comes to life and hunts the group of developers." How to Make a Monster (2001)

I cannot get enough of films that depict game developers and not just video games:

"Three friends are on the verge of getting their video game financed when their benefactor is taken hostage by terrorists." Game Over, Man! (2018)

And this one is the future liberals want:

"Spain. Year 2017. Video games are forbidden. Some insurgents are fighting to achieve their liberty. But in a oppressed world, everything is harder. But they are their own cause. They are gamers." Game Over (2017)

An amazing collection!

One day soon, I'll post my 'bloodsports of the future' article I wrote for Cinema Sewer, which includes some of these games.

in reply to @lizardengland's post:

Once you get started with adding games in anime to your list it is going to get a lot bigger. Off the top of my head: There's a mobile game in FLCL Sword Art Online is about people who get stuck in a fictional video game I think "Btooom!" is also about that but I'm not sure. Also I think maybe [C]-Control has the same plot.

Yeah, I started drawing a bit of a line between "in a game, but really it is just a fantasy world" vs. "in a game, and there's gameplay mechanics clearly defined", though I suspect some of the films on this list break that rule and plenty of anime fit it. But as someone who doesn't watch anime (please hold your pitchforks) it's hard to judge which ones would be valid to include and which wouldn't. Sword Art Online is the one I will likely start with once I get to that area of film.

Alright, having reread the post and comments so far, I want to redeem myself:

  1. Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope - a special, circular hologram version of chess played with monsters (in the millennium falcon). I believe this also happens again in the newer trilogy (probably ep7?) as well as one of the episodes of Clone Wars.
  2. Invader Zim Season 1 Episode 2 "NanoZim" features Gaz playing a game in the background of Dibs's house, which later becomes relevant because she later is controlling a microscopic robot inside of Dibs's body - thinking it's just a video game - and uses "quarter circle back" or "the transformation move" to become more powerful and try to defeat Zim.
  3. Steven Universe (multiple episodes and games) - Steven owns a couple game systems and plays games on them as catalogued on (*edited to remove Fandom) this wiki

Yes! I'll add that one (I haven't seen it yet). I don't include pure reality tv (Truman Show, Dead Set) but will include things with gameplay mechanics, as long as it's not just a fictional clone of an existing game show (i.e. Jeopardy rules but called something else).

the best part is that it isn't even particularly important to the episode, it's just the thing he's doing while the bad guy messes with his locker. He could've been doing any kind of gym activity, but they went with the weirdest thing they could think of

Amazing list ! Not sure if you're taking suggestions (you didn't specifically said so) but if you do, there are a bunch of fictional boardgames introduced by the french TV show Kaamelott. The TV show was a big success in France, and most french people from my generation have heard of these fictional games.

  • Cul de chouette (owl's bottom) : S01E57
  • Sirop (Syrup?) : S02E72
  • Sloubi (doesn't mean anything) : S03E50

Kaamelott is a comedy serie and the joke for these games are always the same : the knight Percival tries to teach a game from Wales to his friends, but the rules are always very complicated and absurd to the point we don't even know in the end if the game is played with cards, dies, something else...

I found the sloubi et sirop episode on internet if you want to watch them (they're less than 2mn long). Couldn't find the Cul de chouette which is the most famous one

Sloubi : https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=2078952682331419

Sirop : https://twitter.com/ornikkar/status/1040721950220464128

Edit : Apparently there are also

Given the Batman Beyond episode on here, I'd point out the Riddler's computer game "Riddle of the Minotaur" from the Batman the Animated Series episode "If You're so Smart, Why Aren't You Rich?"

If you're interested in taking suggestions, I'd add Ajimbo from a 1998 episode of the animated series Recess.

It's a tile game featuring different colored animals. The tiles have little puzzle piece-esque notches that fit into each other. The rules are intentionally vague because the game is seen as this mysterious thing that grabs hold of you before you even realize it.

The episode is a fun little time capsule because it came out right at the beginning of Pokémon making its way to the US, and it feels like the writers looking at how Pokémon cards were absolutely sweeping schools across the country.

Liz! I was just watching Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (1989) and the first episode features the main character playing a Duckhunt-style game where he has to shoot monsters to protect a city. What stood out to me is that this game had a publisher’s logo screen load up before the main title screen! Its a little bit of verisimilitude I can’t remember seeing before— even the fake copyright date had a little story detail, as it set the game as two years old by that point.
