One of the neatest things I've learned from my latest round of research ahead of putting together a new Unseen Japan article is that in the Edo period, you'd know the Date daimyo's procession on sight, from a distance. It was the one daimyo procession allowed to keep their guns live during sankin-kōtai.
So, they'd be trailing matchlock smoke.
