So I have two very wonderful partners, though I only live with one of them. I have some measure of Japanese language skill in common with the other, so one of the things I do is write her tanka, historic Japanese poetry in 5/7/5/7/7 syllable format. (You might know its descendant form, the haiku.)

Anyway, I write this woman tanka because it's a way I like to flirt, but also because it keeps me limber with both classical Japanese and kanji in general. I write tanka for other reasons too, but primarily, I use them to flirt with this partner.

It's a pain in the ass sometimes, writing in historic Japanese. It takes time, getting things just so, and perusing my ready references-- Weblio's Kobun is my preferred one-- and sometimes I wonder why I don't just write in modern Japanese or in English.

But the way she blushes when I send her one or when read her one? That makes it worth it every goddamn time. And besides, I get to show my affection for her like courtly women a thousand years ago did-- how wild is that?

I love you so fucking much, you magnificent dragon.
