i wish games/media in general cared about paying artists more because having character artists see making splash art for free-to-play games as the end game/"i made it"/steady source of income makes me so fucking sad

you can be so much more than the most boring form of digital art in existence but it's like the only gig that pays well because it makes millions off the back of extracting pennies from people with poor impulse control

in reply to @erica's post:

seeing all the artist alley booths at the anime con this weekend that was all just gacha/genshin shit too was such a bummer. whole cottage industry appealing to relationships built only because of dollars spent.

it wasn't any better "back in my day" really, like, on the surface there's no difference between every booth being about the latest shonen jump thing vs. this but the reason that stuff is 'popular' is evil and there's so little substance underneath it. race to the bottom shit.

i dunno, i'd rather tons of MHA fanart than shit promoting gambling addiction, personally

i don't care about it but at least it comes from no less healthy a place than any other fandom

would be nice if there were more room for original work though :(

I meant more "it wasn't any better" in that back then, the stuff that sold was still "this is a thing I like" primarily. The principle is the same. I obv think it's better to have that then the current thing.

Fair enough, yeah. I do feel that sometimes, even as someone who's been dipping into fan works. It feels like a struggle to get people to care about anything they don't already know about. The diff in response between my original, and my fan work, is ... uncomfortably vast, at times.
