A brief bit of news out of Seattle: Restaurant Workers United (RWU) have just announced their unionization efforts at Glo's Cafe, a well known local Seattle eatery, have been successful. Congratulations! I believe this is RWU's third union win and it's definitely their first in Seattle.

The vote was 12 votes to decertify, 11 votes to not decertify. The workers there are no longer covered accordingly.

The union writes that:

We're sad to announce that we lost a decertification vote at Glo's in Seattle 11-12. Despite promising to work with and respect their staff, the owners busted the union plain and simple.

Several pro-union workers departed in recent months, while the owners' friends and family were hired in. The decertification effort was led by one owner's best friend and the other owner's partner, among others. They employed fear and emotional manipulation to sway newer staff.

The union workers at Glo's fought hard for their vision and took the high road. They have nothing to be ashamed of. They're sad to see this behavior after putting so much love into the restaurant and working their asses off to make it succeed in the new space.

We're not calling for a boycott out of respect for the workers who remain. That said, we cannot continue to promote Glo's or recommend that you patronize it as a union business.

Can someone explain union votes to a spoiled dane?

Here you can join a union relevant to your position or education regardless of your coworkers.
We definitely have specific deals between union and company, when the company employes a large number of members from a specific union, but even if that isn't the case, you can still join and get a lot of benefits.

I believe if your union is certified, the company has a legal requirement to bargain with you. If you're just in a union but the rest of the employees aren't, you don't have much power
