If you're coding, your pinkies get a real workout holding all the modifiers down. So a coding-centric keyboard would have them more central, and/or more of them. Maybe for coders the space bar should be split into three - shift / space / ctrl - then you can use your thumbs to do modifiers as well.
i'm so interested in that topic right now! i have tried a couple of modifier options, none of which are great so far. i first tried a symmetrical layout with 1u space bars next to 1u modifiers. but i feel like 2u space bars help with angle flexibility and touch typing.
so currently i am doing two 2u space bars, and z and ? hold as modifiers. i am not in love with the pinky holds.
i'm looking long and hard at layouts with asymmetrical thumb keys. enter / backspace, and mod / space is compelling. maybe worth ditching symmetry for.
Let me know when you want out of the rabbit-hole I dug you - I'll toss you a line.
