This game/series seems pretty rad (especially now that I'm reading the source material atm). That said, whenever I look it up I get confused by all the versions and revisions for each game, and there isn't a lot of info out there on the differences. Good to know this entry is a solid one though.

It’s kind of weird, New Legend (the update after this one) actually has fewer characters than this one! It has a few more characters unlocked by default, but it dropped the secret playable bosses you can get in 9D with a code.

Yeah it's definitely confusing and that's not even getting into the like four versions of KOV1 that there appear to me. I'm not even sure if there are changes to the system mechanics or just the roster changes too. I wish I could actually find info about all the differences between iterations but I haven't had much success.

There's more info about that in Chinese but that doesn't help much in English, huh? AFAICT, it's:

  • Knights of Valour - the original. Has several secret characters
  • Knights of Valour Plus - a rerelease of KoV with the secret characters unlocked by default and a couple bosses made playable.
  • Knights of Valour Super Heroes - a significantly modified KoV featuring the juggle-heavy combo system from KoV2.
  • KoV Super Heroes Plus and other derivatives - KoV SH with more playable bosses.
  • KoV2 - the original release. Five characters by default, four unlockable.
  • KoV2 Nine Dragons -All characters unlocked by default. Combat system updated. Features "evil" versions of five characters with alternate movesets; four more "evil" versions are unlockable with a code. Also has codes to unlock bosses.
  • KoV2 New Legend - a rerelease on a newer hardware platform. Actually has fewer characters - the main cast is all unlocked by default, both good and evil versions, but playable bosses are gone. Characters now have levels and gain experience over time. Balance is significantly different as a result. IC cards let you save your progress after a run and carry your levels/items through on the next playthrough. Has new bosses, including a new final boss.

Dang that's pretty comprehensive I'll have to pin this comment somewhere so I can reference it later lol I feel like wiki is lying to me about which game has more characters then but also it could just be wrong or listing the characters in the game even if they're unplayable. At least with KOV1 it's straightforward enough. My assumption was also that Seven Spirits was its own thing, but I suppose I'm not 100% on that.

Nice! It looked pretty neat, I assumed it was different just due to being on different hardware (I actually only discovered this series when I was looking into what games the Atomiswave had), but maybe the alternate versions of 1 and 2 are also ports to different hardware too haha
