Maaaaaaaaaaan. I'm so disappointed.

See, I just found out that one of my formative late-90s Japanese arcade game fandom artists, Aoi Nanase, has apparently said "fuck this" to traditional art and gone in whole-hog on AI bullshit.

Aoi Nanase was a popular bishoujo analog artist back in the 90s, particularly in gaming fandom spheres. Her acrylic/watercolor art was phenomenal, as you can no doubt see above. Part of her popularity came from her doujin work, particularly doujinshi based on games, especially Samurai Spirits/Shodown. (Her circle's even called Power Gradation!) For a while she was, like, the Nakoruru artist that wasn't working officially for SNK... and even then they hired her to do freelance illustrations from time to time, so she had at least a little approval. She'd later do an original manga, Angel/Dust, as well as various freelance art projects. I have a resin kit based on an original character of hers I've been meaning to work on.

But now... she's on Twitter, proudly shilling for AI art and posting her AI art "creations." She's even selling a book at an upcoming doujinshi event for AI art, the very concept of which makes me extremely angry because doujin is about extreme, abundant passion and AI art has fucking none of that

I could maybe, maybe see embracing AI art as an excuse if she had, like, debilitating arthritis or something that made it hard for her to draw. But, to my knowledge, that's not the case. All of her AI art posts have that same soulless, uncannily-perfect coloring and dead-eyed look that's endemic to AI anime-style illustrations. Compared to the elegance and energy of her analog work, it's like night and day. At least I'm glad to see that a lot of folks on J-Twitter are giving her the biggest of eyerolls (if not outright trashing her).

Well, at least I still can cling to Ryo Ramiya. The GOAT 90s pin-up queen will never betray me! I hope
