if you use wgpu you can take way better advantage of gpu hardware than opengl allows. probably better to use one of those than to start with opengl and get stuck with it. for example minecraft nvidium massively boosts performance, but it doesn't work on amd gpus because the apis that make it possible aren't supposed to be in opengl, nvidia just puts it there anyways. it would work for all gpus if minecraft used vulkan. wgpu is a slightly higher level api that supports pretty much every graphics api and shader language, so it's compatible with everything easily.
i think there's a big cohost post about wgpu somewhere saying it's a very good api too. i haven't made any real projects with it but wgpu does look like it makes more sense than opengl. also being able to use any shader language is very cool.
