Shouting Into The Void About: Crystal Project
Crystal Project is a 2022 indie RPG.
Crystal Project might be my Game of the Year.
I’ve seen very little of people talking about this game, and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to get picked up by any major streamer or website any time soon. So I figured I’d give it a shout-out.
Put bluntly, Crystal Project is a game that asks a question: What if Final Fantasy 5 was made with an open-world in the style of Elden Ring or BOTW?
Put less stupidly, Crystal Project is an indie RPG by a solo developer named Andrew Whitman that combines turn-based combat and a mix-and-match job system with completely open exploration.
The game does not tell you where to go or what to do. It leaves you to discover that for yourself.
I usually don’t have the attention span to stick with games, but so far I have 45 hours in it. It is now one of my favorite JRPGs of all time. It has really great Assist Options in the pause menu for configuring difficulty.
It’s a very weird game. You might not like it. It has a meaty “tutorial area”, similar to the Great Plateau in BOTW. It feels like it comes from an alternate universe where Square Enix took a very different path after Final Fantasy 6.
Try it out, if you like exploring :)
