Personally, I think MMOs are kind of a dead genre. Their profitability is just eclipsed by mobile games so big companies don't really fund them anymore. The ones that are funded usually have gambling addiction crap and really plain/watered down gameplay.
If you really need a game to scratch that MMO itch try looking into private servers. I remember having a lot of fun on a Mabinogi private server for while, that was like my fav mmo in highschool so I was happy to replay it without the modern additions and predatory monetization.
Honestly would need to know what type of game you like to make any specific reccomendations. Probably everyone will say to play FFXIV though, that game is really popular at the moment.
yeah, i think a lot of my craving is driven by nostalgia from the big MMO boom when i was a teenager, when everyone was trying to be the "WoW-killer". FFXIV seems to be about the only one that still resembles a traditional MMO anymore.
