garfield is a neoliberal capitalist who thrives on the labour of others, but abhors the concept of expending his own effort to sate his hunger. jon arbuckle is the state, who is ostensibly in control but is in actuality subservient to the whims of capital. nermal is the petit-bourgeois intelligentsia, who may occasionally contest the competence of the capitalist class but will never seriously challenge it. and odie is the proletariat who suffers under the jackboot of garf. garfield attempts to create art and culture, through his fencetop performances, but his position as the owner of capital estranges him from his fellow humanbeing, and so his art can never truly capture the human experience, and draws only the ire of the working class
