a 3 player mahjong table with 17 tiles remaining in the draw wall. east player is in tenpai. i am south player, and west player has just dropped a 1 of bamboo which would put me in tenpai.

at this point i've been thinking out of my mind about which tiles i have that are safe. west has hard committed out of bamboo relatively early, so i know they're probably waiting on a pin (6 pin, it turns out), whereas east didn't give a lot of information before riichi other than hard committing out of bamboo 7 almost right away.

do i pon this? if i pass, i can probably guarantee that i'm safe from the riichi. i have two 1s of bamboo to drop that are now guaranteed safe. the bamboo 4s are also almost certainly safe; west has a 4 in discard, and east has a bamboo 7 in discard, which means they cannot be on a x56x wait. if they don't ron the 1, it can't be a x23xx wait either. a 4 wait for their pair seems extremely unlikely, as they discarded a 7 and 9 before riichi, which represents is a much stronger hand shape than a lone 4. it could be a 3x5 wait, but given there are two 3s in the discard pile, that feels decently unlikely. if i feel like folding, i have a pretty safe out.

ultimately, i decide to pon the 1. i have a decent wait of 3 tiles and 5 dora, representing a 7 han hand. considering this win could swing me into first place, the potential of swinging to last right then and there feels worth the risk. i drop the 7 and it passes by uncalled.

5 tiles remain in the draw wall

after a few draws into completely safe discards, i draw the 5 of bamboo. not long ago i would have decided it's worth the risk, but at this point there are so few unaccounted for tiles, and i'm positive that all of west's contain dot tiles. in fact, the only completely unaccounted for tiles are 4 of dots and 5 of bamboo, so there's no way in hell i can drop either with a riichi on the board, as those are now extremely likely pair/triplet waits.

but, another option. my earlier deliberations told me the 4s of bamboo were safe discards, and there's no reason that should have changed. this puts me in furiten tenpai. which in this case, actually rules

exhaustive draw, with myself and the east player in tenpai

an exhaustive draw prolongs the game and gives me the chance to get back in 1st.

i would like to just mention all of this deliberation took place in the space of two turns. the turn timer is 5 seconds. this game is going to kill me

in reply to @roxivs's post:

i'm actually specifically playing mahjong ranked as a therapy exercise to not murder another game in cold blood. i allowed myself like a year of just enjoying myself before it felt like murder was the natural next step, rather than something i was stressing myself out with immediately.
