I am fascinated by Genshin Impact’s approach to localization, the Chinese is (to put it in the appropriate register of English) “the sea born of ten thousand fountainheads” and rendering it as “pelagic primaevality” a) is not at all literal but is thematically connected b) sounds metal as hell c) is going to be the direct cause of American high schoolers getting higher SAT scores when they have to run off and look up “pelagic”. It is a much more polished, skillful level of localization than most video games get

if i didn't already have FFXIV (and its stupendous localization) to focus on/obsess over i would probably be all over Genshin

everything i've heard about the English loc is incredible

like there are games you can buy that don't have as good a localization as this

this is very very interesting, do you know if genshin/mihoyo does inhouse translation for the english localization?
i've heard a couple times that their japanese team is inhouse and that the quality on that end is uhhhhhhh questionable at best, so imagine my surprise when english is Actually Good

I’d be pretty surprised if it’s not in house — I pulled this image from their Chinese socials, so they had both the Chinese and English names of the OST release ready up front and they’re being treated as a matched pair for branding purposes
