This is the most precise review of the game I have ever read. In fact it has all the precision that its collision engine lacks
i still think of the coupon barrel
like. at one point you need to steal a mug from a restaurant (it's one-third of the macguffin you need to progress); you need a coupon to get inside the restaurant; you can screw up your chance to steal the mug, necessitating another coupon
there are two different puzzles you can solve for a coupon; if you solve one, then fail to steal the mug, you need to solve the other
what happens if you use up both chances?
an entire barrel of coupons shows up in a prominent place, with the explanation that they're just giving them away now because people weren't jumping through the hoops necessary to earn them (yourself excepted) and they were piling up
the implication, in-universe, is that Guybrush could've saved himself a lot of trouble if he had just waited a little while
this being a game with event triggers and whatnot, that obviously isn't an option for him
but more than once IRL i've found myself putting in effort, going to the trouble of doing something, only for a fortuitous(?) turn right after to render everything i did pointless
