so i've actually been wanting to draw this for about a month or so but never remembered to actually draw it. i have decided, to connect it to "suffocation," its loredumpin' time
i have two main stories that take place in the same universe, but in different timelines. the first one takes place in the 2100s, in a fictional city named Body somewhere in japan. the second takes place around 2600-2900 (havent figured that out yet) and has no singular definite area it takes place in other than just generally outer space.
in the first story, the story mostly takes place in two districts of Body, one of them being Spirit. Spirit is a sort of religious district and the only place in Body that still houses traditional devilish temples, people and culture, even after the humans attempts to eradicate devilish tradition in Body. it still struggles to survive however, because of how Spirit is treated by the big bosses of the city. in short, its a horrible place to live.
Spirit, being the only cultural district in Body, is responsible for all traditional devil cremations. (as well as all other traditional ceremonies) in devilish religions, devils have to be cremated a specific way so that their soul returns safely to Hell. the heart is removed, along with the ears, which are attached to a special organ: the blackpump. then, these body parts are stuffed into a specialized "lantern" along with some of their closest belongings, a plant named reedwater, and an offering. these lanterns are then lit and hung on wires strung between buildings throughout the streets of Spirit. the contents, when burned, produces a very special dense black smoke that permeates through the entirety of Spirit. to people who arent exposed to the smoke very often, its hard to breathe and poisonous. to the residents of Spirit, it does not affect them.
in the second story, Spirit and Body still exist, though Body has mostly been abandoned except for some areas. Spirit is still occupied by monks as a sort of worshipping ground and a bit of a conservatory for devilish culture. the war between humans and devils is still ever going, and a while after the first storyline had ended, Spirit had been gassed by the humans in desperate attempt to get rid of these guys. they had attempted to attack them directly before, but the cremation smoke is so dense and toxic to humans that going there is a death sentence. therefore, they made the choice to poison the air and forget about them. as a result, the residents of spirit had to adapt to the new air by looting the supplies used by The Church of Asmodeus* way back in 2100.
they rehashed the old supplies to meet their needs, and created full-body suits to keep the poison at bay. the character in the drawing is wearing one of these suits to avoid "suffocation" ;D
*The Church of Asmodeus is a cult that occupied the second main district of body, Heart during the first story. they're not incredibly relevant to this drawing though, but its worth knowing that they were engaging in battle with ~certain~ residents of Spirit, and cuz they weren't used to the cremation smoke, they had a large supply of gas masks.
