so now apparently I am going to be on Ayman Mohyeldin's show at around 8:45 Eastern on June 22! I'll be talking about this article I wrote last week, about bomb threats and Pride flag vandalism in the first two weeks of June.
I wasn't familiar with Mohyeldin until I was asked to do the show, but what I've seen of his work certainly passes my personal sniff test; he was reportedly friends with Shireen Abu Akleh, one of my heroes, so that admittedly sweetened the deal. that being said I can't wait to tell all his liberal viewers that calling the police still makes us less safe even--especially!--during Pride
anyway, if for some reason you feel like watching cable news on Saturday night, pop in and say hi to ya girl!
this was wild gang ngl. Trying to focus less on what I didn't fit into the interview and more on what I did -- I was pretty nervous but hopefully I jogged some liberals into supporting trans rights a little more fiercely. If you were watching, thanks for the support!
(Also I didn't get a chance to tell people not to call the cops but Ayman at least started the segment off by reminding everyone Pride was a riot)
to be transparent, I don't know that I 100% agree with the framing that segments like mine "exemplify what LGBTQ coverage should be year round." obviously I agree with the general point that mainstream media does not consult us often enough or spend enough time on issues that affect us, but speaking only to my own segment, I don't think I did the best job of communicating the full picture. I still feel bad about not redirecting to the much more concerning trend of interpersonal violence and hate crimes against people, rather than property, and I worry that some liberal viewers will just end up calling the police on someone and cause more harm. queer and trans journalists need so much more room and time than we have right now in order to tell these stories in the way they deserve.
that being said I do appreciate all the kind words people have shared about this, and I'd like to think I at least increased liberals' understanding of how normalized and mainstream anti-trans violence has become on the right. more coverage like this would also help spread the responsibility around so I and the others in this article don't feel like I/we have to capture the entire story of U.S. queer bashing in less than five minutes. in the meantime my usual clickityclacking will proceed apace
