so forever ago i found out about tarot through alejandro jodorowsky and picked up a marseille deck according to his recommendation. a couple years later, im actually starting to learn about tarot and a few things have come to my attention:
-
marseilles is extremely clunky for beginners and seemingly in general compared to rider-waite or thoth
-
jodorowsky's book on it is almost universally disrecommended
-
the general reputation of marseilles owners is elitist snobs who own the deck just to feel superior
and yet even knowing all this, for some reason, i cannot bring myself to part with the damn thing. even when i feel like a fool for buying it without knowing what i was getting into. even though i really wish i was learning with some other deck.
i think it comes down to equal parts not wanting to swallow my pride and accept that i made a mistake, and the emotional attachment to the excitement and wonder i felt at getting my first tarot deck. maybe it's something to ask the cards about?
