how many AAA games launched in 2024, I wonder, will disappear forever when inevitably their servers are shut down due to 'declining profits'

it's really a sign of how thoroughly, deeply uninterested games production has become in its own long-term survival or cultural impact, when it's committed this hard to permanently killing any game that isn't a massive, instant success

a world of disposable and ethereal entertainment

It makes me not ever want to start them, when they aren't billed as an mmo. Maybe it's hypocritical of me, just, mmos that take dollars tend to scale at the correct speed to not vanish overnight

the entertainment industry wants us to invest in their products more than ever, yet the incentive to invest anything, either emotionally, intellectually, or
financially, couldn't be lower.

why invest your heart into a tv show when netflix will just cancel it after a season or two.

why invest thought into a movie you might not be quick enough to see before it's yanked from distribution for whatever inane reason.

why invest financially into a video games economy when said game and everything you bought could become thoroughly meaningless at the flip of a switch.

I was listening to an interview with an Immortals of Aveum dude and it was such a depressing situation where they decided to hold the game back to add some polish, missed their relatively light launch window, got out-competed by bigger name franchises for media mindshare, and had to lay most of the studio workers off because they didn't have any publishers willing to fund preproduction work

...only for the game sales to pick up over the holiday break after the big releases were done and people had time to check back on the games they'd missed. I don't know if they plan to hire people back, or if they'd want to go back, but the absolute razor's edge that these studios are operating on is ludicrous. Why plan for tomorrow when the industry could grind you to a pulp five minutes from now?

Honestly while I still play video games to a degree, I would say that the level to which the situation has become just utterly and absolutely ridiculous in the way the shit of the last decade seem to have reached an accelerationist pitch in the last couple of years... I'm increasingly finding myself spending more and more time with just the couple of tabletop(Lancer) games I'm running and the preparations for sessions. Often at times when I'd normally would have been playing games instead.

Like it's legit in the process of turning me off from the hobby itself.
