been giving the Witcher books another whirl, they’re. . . alright? i read the first short story collection years back and wasn’t very impressed, but i liked the second one much more and now i’m about a third of the way through the first novel and yeah. it’s alright.

the level of sophistication is definitely growing as i keep reading, so i’m open to the later books knocking my socks of. so far it’s really carried by the extremely good premise (witchers do be cool) and geralt’s relationships being well realised (geralt and ciri’s scenes all hit).

i’d love to hear from somebody has read the books in both English and the original Polish about how they feel about the translation. so far the prose feels very pedestrian and i’m really curious to what extent this is a translator failing to convey Sapowski’s style, or if the the originals are just known for their not terribly stylistic, pedestrian prose.
