finished assassn’s quest earlier today and really, really liked it. feels like i could write a whole essay on some of the characters but also it’s 4:45am and i don’t want to. i spent the last 150 pages simultaneously going ‘holy shit this is so cool’ whilst also being impressed by what a thoughtful and skilled writer Robin Hobb is, which to me is the essence of good genre fiction.

rechosting this because i noticed a horrible, horrible typo (that i fixed) like a couple of hours ago that totally garbled the meaning

finally finished royal assassin; it’s a good ass book! wild it took me so long to finish (i think the final count was something like 35 days). i got extremely distracted from it like two thirds of the way through (worked on a personal project which was nice). i did very much let it happen though - i knew things were gonna break very bad and i was being a little baby.

hobb is very good at a style of plotting i very much enjoy that i think of as a bit like making stew. you add ingredients and just let it simmer until it bubbles over dramatically. which i suppose would make you a bad chef, but a very good writer. i dunno if that metaphor quite does it justice, or if i’ve quite done my metaphor justice but hopefully i’ve conveyed something of the feeling.

anyway despite telling myself i would not do this i immediately read 150 pages of assassin’s quest.
