Fin al Comercio de Armas con Israel's website
This is not my usual wheelhouse, but I'm sure many of you will be delighted to hear that multiple Spanish unions and political parties are signatories to the Fin al Comercio de Armas con Israel (End the arms trade with Israel) coalition in Spain―this, as the name implies, being an ongoing effort to end Spanish weapon sales to Israel.
Among other unions I can pick out from the signatories page are the CNT, Confederación General del Trabajo (CGT), Central Unitària de Treballadores (CUT), Sindicato Andaluz de Trabajadores (SAT), Federación de Sindicatos de Periodistas (FeSP), Sindicato de Periodistas de Andalucía (SPA-FeSP), Colectivo Unitario de Trabajadores (Aragón), and Confederación Sindical de Comisiones Obreras.
Among parties with representation in Spain's current parliament or a regional parliament, I count Adelante Andalucía, Bloque Nacionalista Galego (BNG), Candidatura d’Unitat Popular (CUP), EH Bildu, Podemos, Sumar, and Compromís per València. No doubt I am missing others purely due to the language and familiarity barrier.
If you are a Spanish citizen you should be able to sign their pledge here; if you are somehow in a position to determine whether an organization signs onto this, the organization form can be found here. For the benefit of English speakers, a machine translation of the Fin al Comercio de Armas con Israel main page can be found below the cut.
Why is it urgent to end the arms trade with Israel?
Did you know that Israel is intentionally bombing residential neighborhoods, hospitals, schools, refugee camps and ambulances in the Gaza Strip and that the Spanish State continues to sell weapons to Israel that it uses to repress and massacre the Palestinian people?
Since 2000, the Spanish State has sold weapons to Israel worth 139 million euros. Did you know that the Spanish State buys, with our taxes, weapons from Israel and that these purchases contribute directly to the economy of a country that commits war crimes and crimes against humanity? Israel uses Palestine as a testing ground to test weapons and technology of repression that it then sells to the rest of the world under the “combat-tested” brand. Weapons and technology tested on the Palestinian population in operations that flagrantly violate international humanitarian law and international human rights law. Weapons and technology purchased by various armies around the world, including the Spanish army.
Last September, the Spanish State authorized the purchase of the SILAM rocket launcher developed by Elbit Systems, one of the Israeli companies that profits the most from the occupation, for a value of 576.4 million euros. In October it authorized the purchase of 1,680 Spike missiles worth 285 million euros. With this money the genocide in Gaza is financed.
To prevent Israel from continuing to massacre the Palestinian people, it is urgent to put an end to the business of buying and selling weapons to Israel. Help us achieve it!
