Speaking of games that let you guard a caravan as it crosses the deep desert, I am still really impressed by how effective Kenshi is as an RPG despite having no quest system whatsoever. All it has is faction reputation and “world states” which is mostly used to change the world if you kidnap or kill someone important. Like maybe their enemy takes over their lands or you get a reward. Otherwise it's completely open ended and turns into something people can make stories with in a similar way to Dwarf Fortress despite the relative simplicity of Kenshi. I am quite curious how Kenshi 2 expands on all of this.
