I've been online for, uh, over a quarter century (since mid 90s) and have seen more net communities fold than I care to remember, from full-fledged forums to ephemeral chatrooms to weird undefinable places. I've lost track of countless people, some I talked to a lot, others I only ever watched from afar.
It's demoralizing when it happens again and again, but the fact that it does occur repeatedly is a sign that new places keep being born. To paraphrase Jeff Goldblum, life finds a way. People will always find a way to connect, either by creating a new ecosystem, or burrowing inside an existing one.
An ending begets new beginnings, the wheels of fate circle back around and around and around again.
