The game has pointed me to a bonus dungeon. It's been made apparent throughout that bonus dungeons are not really optional, as the bosses get steadily stronger and at a point the only way to get stronger to match them is to find high-end gear in places like this.

I'm getting some of my guys one-shotted in boss fights despite their gear, so I'm hearing the message on this: play the bonus dungeon or you won't be strong enough for the final boss.

Two floors into the bonus dungeon I wonder why there's no way out: barriers mark every exit. And what's with the gold safes? I never got a gold treasure key.

It turns out that these barriers can be knocked over, provided at some point you changed the main character to one particular job. You get the ability immediately, so you can just switch and switch back. It is the only ability like this and you would only ever know if you happened to switch this one guy to this one job, in this game where switching jobs is useless and actively detrimental.

Also, the only place in the game you can switch jobs is a single office in another city. Some of the design choices in this game are absolutely baffling.

Boy, your experience has been just about a complete opposite from mine, save for the absolutely oddball choice of locking away the ability to break walls with that one job, and tucking away the key seller in a location that required said job. Needless to say, I don't have enough RPG experience I guess to feel that this game had exploited me this badly and it actually got me BACK into trying other RPG's 2 years ago and I managed to finish a couple more of them, with more in the works. Different strokes for sure!
