Not going to get into specific plot points, so don't worry about that.
Pretty good central story once it gets going. These games usually have really strong stories about big personal grudges with a cathartic explosion of one-on-one violence, but the story in this game calls for something a little different that aims for the heartstrings rather than raw action-movie spectacle. I found it difficult to empathize with a character that vile, personally, and didn't think the very end worked.
On the gameplay end, not a great finale. The final "dungeon" is the most inspired of the game, but that's not really saying a lot when all the other dungeons are identical repeating corridors. This was merely the first dungeon that was a place vs. being a non-place.
Was also not fond of the "substitute final boss", whose twist was a bit much.
Basically, to ensure you have a tough time no matter how leveled-up you are, the final boss has a one-hit kill. This game obeys the oldest of RPG rules, which is that if the hero ever gets KOed, the whole game ends. There is no saving allowed during the pretty lengthy final dungeon, so if you die you're faced with the rough surprise choice of either giving up half your on-hand money to start from the boss or a quarter of your on-hand money to start from the beginning of the dungeon (?!)
So this is a guide-required moment. If the player sticks with the base job, then they probably have the specific skill that allows the hero to survive the one-hit kill. If they don't, too bad. I was lucky to have bought some rocket launchers.
I might do some of the post-game and I think everyone should experience a Million God jackpot but I'm mostly done with this game.
