I've been reading Junichi Nojo's Naki no Ryu (The Calling Dragon) as I've been looking at English-translated mahjong manga (a small niche to be sure). Transcendently moody mobster comics with breathtaking pages like this one every so often. Engaging purely on its sheer coolness and sense of style even as the same thing happens over and over again. (A cool drifter wins at mahjong repeatedly, while a starry-eyed, lovestruck yakuza boss tries to force him into working for him.)
I had watched the quite rare OVA of this (by early Gainax!) and the manga really shows why they chose this particular title to animate. Its style is inimitable, and while the OVA is definitely slick, it can't approach the impact of the manga's images.
