I'm trying to finish The Atrocity Archives tonight and I seem to have this persistent problem with lovecraftian stuff where the actual horror just goes completely over my head and i fail to pay attention to what makes things scary, until any gory details or whathaveyou are divulged. It's been there since I've tried to dive into HP's work as a teenager, too.
In the original source material, I guess it's actually really good that I missed the point. "Wow cool monsters" is actually the morally correct takeaway from the Mythos. But in the case of Laundry Files, it sucks because I really do want to give this work my full attention! Much of the writing is funny and cool. Honestly, it's at the point where the beurocratic spy meeting stuff surrounding the horrors are more interesting to me than the horrors themselves. It's a real Shin Godzilla Situation
