Gave myself a little challenge today

This old thang is from uh....march of 2022, according to sharex. I still like it, but for the life of me I'm never able to recreate that patch no matter how hard i try

I decided that if i was ever gonna have my very own physical eurorack i should probably learn to work with limitations more. I have a bad habit of just Making A New File whenever i do anything creatively which probably contributes to my worse habit of not finishing things--plus I have a much better idea of what I'm doing thanks to a book bought recently

The challenge was to just Scrap Every Cable Here and make a totally new patch that only sounds kind of the same. The patch notes thinking about it while i was at work were as follows:

  • So like. I never needed this many clocks.
  • And using a waveshaper like AstroVibe as a VCA was kind of nonsense. But I still want it there.
  • FM-OP can be replaced by a regular degular VCO with a regular degular filter.

here was the silly little redo

I failed to recreate the same thing for a few reasons. Here's what i learned:

  • That delay module sucks ass. don't need it
  • AstroVibe is soooooo much better to work with after being plugged through a VCA. So now I don't have to lose what i used it before for
  • Ditto of above with BossFight.
  • i didn't actually use NoteSeq in the rack I have. I used 8seq, which is okay.
  • Using Shifty as an analogue to Clocked is perfect for things I want to modulate but not every time.
  • I got rid of a couple of these too--notably the NSYNTHI modules. The only one I actually like of those is the simpler, and even that has a better replacement. HOWEVER!!!! I did add a few extra VCAs and filters. And an oscilloscope to see what I was doing. So much for working with limitations.
  • An aside though: i actually think what i added was genuinely needed with these. Like using the VCA to control an LFO that's CV'ing resonance on one of the Filters makes that particular oscillator sound nice and Pan-y.

  • so i guess my Actual lesson there is that I should have fifty million VCAs do anything in my all but eventual physical grid

also also: i wound up appending Samuel as another sequencer just so Plaits wouldn't be going on forever. Sorry. The word is Mintchip.

Also Also
i learned that the little snail symbol on AstroVibe means LFO which delights and serves me well. I love you little sine wave snail.

Thinking very deeply about my situation/comedy ratio this morning

Sitcoms are typically anywhere between 40situation/60comedy, 50situation/50comedy, or 60situation/40comedy, right? You can't have something that's all setup, or its just a drama. you can't have something that's all punchline, or it's just a funny gallery.

Alternatively, a joke (definition: small piece of comedy) is that of a setup-punchline formula. Using "why did the chicken cross the road" as a perfect example of the setup of a "situation," where the "comedy" is whatever ending to that joke you may be expecting.

My conclusion is that I think that all knock knock jokes are micro sitcoms in their most distilled form
