Hulk Review

★★★½

Watched Jun 20, 2023

From a pre-MCU age, a time where Hulk was allowed to exist on his own and not just be the designated comic relief character in a movie where the whole cast is comic relief, Bruce Banner's trauma and inner struggles are explored and at the forefront of the movie

It's still got some goofiness, as expected, but it always feels in spite of what it is, not because of it. It feels far more like a character study of Bruce Banner than any conventional superhero movie, something that I really appreciate

It definitely can feel a little slow and long in the tooth, but it's a refreshing change of pace from modern day CBMs where everything feels like it has to fit into a specific mold

In a few hours I'm going to see The Flash. The end of the DCEU, after 10 years of this universe and trying to get this movie made for 40 something odd years. I've seen a lot of the leaks and I am...not hopeful

I find the use of CG to revive dead actors, especially George Reeves, absolutely repulsive. Repugnant. Truthfully speaking, I'm seeing this more for Batfleck, BatKeaton and Sasha Calle as Supergirl

Fun times

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Review

Wow what a movie. What. A. Movie. It feels like just the right amount of time passed for something like this to happen and it advances the story and world and characters in all the right ways to be such a perfect sequel to a movie many already consider a masterpiece

Miles and Gwen are obviously the main focus, as is their dynamic, but plenty of other Spider-People get their time in the spotlight, even if some of favorites from ITSV are noticeably absent save for a line or two or a cameo. Their absence is sorely felt but it never feels like a genuine hindrance on the movie, giving far more time for Miles and Gwen to experience their stories and really flesh them out and how what they do impacts the people around them

Some future events in BTSV are clearly being set up, something that is definitely appreciated, especially with how ITSV flows into this one feels really obvious in hindsight

Great movie. Great Miles Morales story. Great Spider-Man story
Miles Morales will be looked back in 10, 20 years from now and be appreciated for being just as impactful as Peter Parker ever was

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Review

A movie that's wonderfully animated, wonderfully acted with a wonderful soundtrack and artstyle. This movie (re)defined Miles for the better while still paying tons of respect to the other Spider-People and showing them as no less important and effective in their roles

You'd think a movie that has so many characters to juggle would be incredibly unfocused, but it actually juggles all its characters and plot threads incredibly well

I know it wasn't done by the same people per say, but it's so wild to imagine this coming out of the same studio that just the year before put out The Emoji Movie, a movie so deeply embarrassing and so preoccupied with chasing trends it became incredibly dated within months. But Into the Spider-verse? It doesn't just belong in the conversation of great animated movies and great CBMs, it genuinely belongs in conversations about great movies in general

Fantastic movie. Eagerly looking forward to seeing the sequel tomorrow, as of writing
