Books, DS games, dungeon crawlers

I finished reading the sequel to Baum's classic fantasy tale. It’s pretty fun if not quite as fantastical as the original. I enjoyed the ending a lot, which I won’t give away (spoilers for a 120 year old book), but definitely feels a tad radical and/or satirical. There’s quite a bit of gender politics in this one to say the least; which I’m in no way educated or versed enough in turn of the century American lit to comment on. But it was fun nonetheless and it definitely feels like a unique world. Much more in the vein of Alice or Gulliver than what we expect of fantasy these days; whimsical af basically. I’d recommend it if you enjoyed the first book.

I remember quite vividly watching the 1985 film Return to Oz which was mainly based on the third book in the series, Ozma of Oz, when I was a child. I rewatched it a few years back, and it's actually pretty good. I especially appreciated its use of practical effects. It's pretty damn creepy for a kid's movie, though.

Return to oz is an amazing film - or at least it hit me hard as a child! Terrifying! I didn’t know it was based on one of the novels though; I’m way more interested in reading more now :)
