Hey folks!

In what's definitely a record turnaround time between when I got the work and had said work implemented and, even better, credited, I can now announce as of its release on console that I helped out on Digital Eclipse's Wizardry remake in a very, very, very long overdue first collaboration with the folks over at 8-4. You know those guys! They've worked on some of the same series I have when I haven't worked on them! πŸ˜‰

Now if you haven't been keeping up with the early access project, you're probably wondering what need they could even have for a guy like me when the game was obviously out in English to begin with. Well, in addition to the Japanese localization, the folks at DE were quite savvy enough to bring on board a guy by the name of Benny Matsuyama. He's a prolific writer who's dabbled in a lot of stuff over the years, but most pertinently for this topic of discussion, he wrote a famous strategy guide for the Famicom port of the game back in the day, for which he wrote monster descriptions and other lore, essentially fleshing the game's narrative elements for a Japanese audience. So, long story short, Digital Eclipse brought him back to write brand new bestiary text for all of the enemies of the game, which I then had the pleasure of translating into the indulgently loquacious descriptions you can now enjoy in the game!

This one was definitely a team effort between me, 8-4's editors, and also their English>Japanese translator who handled the main game proper and is a diehard Wizardry head who was incredibly invaluable in explaining the various fun references that Matsuyama-san's text makes to different aspects of the game mechanics and enemy encounters. Without everyone's assistance and very helpful feedback, the final text wouldn't have turned out this confidently polished. But either way, even though it was a pretty small project in the grand scheme of things, I still had a blast writing these and giving the text all of the pomp and circumstance of a DM narrating a tabletop game and describing these foes as you encounter them. It was a genuine honor getting to contribute to such a historically important franchise in my own small way and now I can even say I'm credited in a game together with none other than the Internet's own Blinking White Guy, which is arguably the biggest perk of all! (If you know who he is, you know. :eggbug-uwu:)

Anyway, if you decide to play the game now that this update has launched or have been playing the early access version already, I hope you take the time to page through some of these enemy entries and you enjoy my take on Matsuyama-san's return to the series. It's probably gonna be a long while before I have any more credits to announce, so enjoy this work while it's fresh! I know I am. :eggbug-relieved:

Thanks!!! Definitely not my normal wheelhouse stylistically, but I still had a blast and it made for a very fun belated first collaboration with that crew. Here's to many more, hopefully. 😌

Yeah, I may have bugged John asking if he had anything for me to do while I was going through my work drought last winter and, big ups to him, he was really generous enough to dig that up for me on the spot. Super appreciated for sure and, yeah, I certainly never counted on contributing to this series when I first started doing all this, so I'm excited to have that feather in my cap for sure. :eggbug-relieved:

Thanks! Yeah, from what I gather, Digital Eclipse has tried to pay proper tribute to that Japanese legacy by bringing in some key figures for stuff like this. Really cool stuff. I know people had been hoping they would get some of the artists on board to contribute, but I was pleasantly surprised when I heard they signed on Matsuyama-san, too. Definitely bodes well for that remake's success here in the long term, I reckon. :eggbug-relieved:

Oh, very cool! This was a day-one Early Access buy for me, so it's awesome that you got to be a part of it! I've read some (Though by no means all) of the entries, and they're pretty great.

Semi-related, pretty sure I did the Blinking White Guy in real life when I viewed the credits and saw his name in there. "Wait, I know that name...that's THAT guy, right?"

It was. :eggbug-relieved:

Thanks, friend!!! This was easily the farthest I ever got into one myself and playing some of the EO1 port last year definitely helped me get my sea legs for this, ahaha. I might try one of the later, more anime-y ones on PS2 one of these days since that's at least more my style aesthetically. πŸ€”
