Here’s the Ladybird version of the silver arrow story, where Robin attends an archery competition organised by the Sheriff of Nottingham. He goes knowing that the Sheriff plans to trap him but Robin cannot pass on a chance to show off his incredible archery prowess and possibly even make a fool of the Sheriff.
In some versions of the character, Robin Hood is a noble do-gooder - even coming from an aristocratic family who had their land repossessed by Sir Guy of Gisbourne. But in this Ladybird volume Robin’s definitely cast as a bit of a rogue. Getting into mischief for the sake of adventure. This swashbuckling version of Robin is perfectly illustrated here by John Kenney, who illustrated a lot of these Ladybird books. It's all very 'men in tights' and pulpy as anything. I love it :)
