Follow-up re: Twin Peaks: The Return: Do I need to have recently rewatched the original Twin Peaks to have any idea what's going on, or does it stand on its own?

You absolutely need to watch Twin Peaks to watch Twin Peaks: The Return. It's season 3. It's The Return.

And you VERY need to watch Fire Walk With Me. Maybe even the deleted scenes as well.

And also, don't skip Fire Walk With Me. For some reason it's not on Paramount+ or Showtime or in the Blu-ray box set with the rest of the series, but it's on Max and Criterion Channel.

Yeah, the original season 1/2/FWWM set is long out of print. Now they have a set with 1/2/The Return, but no FWWM. At least Criterion still has the movie, but it's really stupid that it's not in the full series box set.

I would add, you need to have watched it, and you need to have watched the season 2 finale and Fire Walk With Me recently. If you have already seen it tho, I don't think a FULL rewatch of the original series is mandatory as long as you remember the characters reasonably well.

But you should anyway because it's all really good.

Season 2, imho, doesn't drag as much as most people remember! When I rewatched it a couple years ago I was surprised by how smooth it went. It's not as snappy as S1 or S3, but the draggy bits were much smaller than I remembered. James going to find himself is, like, an episode and a half, where my original memory of it was that it took up like 5 episodes

I recently watched all of Twin Peaks (for the first time other than bits and pieces in random broadcasts decades ago) over the course of a couple of months.

I would say as long as you have seen and remember Seasons 1,2 and Fire Walk With Me, then it is fine to go on to Seasons 3.

However it is strictly necessary to have seen all of the previous series and Fire Walk With Me at least once. You can't skip anything

There’s definitely lists out there of which episodes you need to watch before The Return. Basically it’s all of S01, 8ish eps from S02, Fire Walk With Me and Missing Pieces
