'super mario' is actually based on legendary mythological hero 'marion the superb'. 'let's-a go' is taken nearly directly from marion's most recognizable phrase, 'let us go', and the good-natured 'wahoo' is in fact a corrupted form of marion's own tendency to pleasedly exclaim 'what ho!'. even the red and blue was lifted almost directly from marion's own desires to make his own equipment resplendent with the bright colors. my uncle works at nintendo and made out with shigeru miyamoto he told me its true

No, it was a little known fact that Mario was ACTUALLY supposed to be tomaso l’ragazzo. And they changed the name because Americans don’t like the name tomaso, but it lives on. It was originally supposed to be tomaso and Luka, but everyone was like “these names are not very marketable” so while in the 1989 demo version of super Mario bros it’s called super tomaso bros. So yeah I get why they changed the name but it’s sad the Italian erasure real :(
