what's rough about the nuclear semiotics thing is, just imagine if an ancient civilization were able to successfully convey with perfect clarity that a certain place was where they buried the most terrifying, fucked up shit imaginable, that place would have been just swarming with 19th century british explorers, or 21st century youtubers, etc.

like, is your failure mode "this sign can't stop me because I can't read" or is your failure mode "sickos.png"

the british barged right into egyptian tombs that said CURSED! DO NOT ENTER all over them and then ground up and drank mummy powder so they'd probably be out there snorting depleted uranium

I did a dungeon for a TTRPG that was literally just one of these, big desert full of black rock structures that don't lead anywhere except for one with a bunker, mirror satellites overhead make it so you get day time and double day time, sometimes it gets so hot the sand melts. So obviously the place is full of dead adventurers who knew there had to be something good behind all those defences

no long-term nuclear warning message survives contact with the enemy that is the potent blend of hubris and curiosity we all contain. like if i as the head of a 30th century archaeology team found massive forboding constructed structures with clear enough messaging that i understand that there is a danger beneath, would i REALLY pass up the chance to poke my nose into the Danger Zone??

i mean. i think i would. i get very skittish about being imperiled. but SOMEONE wouldn't

i always think about this wrt to the pyramids after visiting them with a partner some years back. once you get inside the architecture is so hostile to normal human movement. we both felt such a palpable message of THIS IS NOT FOR THE LIVING. YOU DON'T BELONG HERE. it was overwhelming.

and like. we observed this aloud, and we still kept going.
