i have two sides: the side that loves the emotional but fantastical violence lite of (most) tokusatsu and the side that loves the hardcore gory violence of brutal action films.

never the two should meet for me. some people are into the more adult or grounded or (shudders) realistic toku and that's valid! that's totally cool. but nah, not for me. just like i don't care for action movies where it doesn't feel like something is happening to these people, carefree slaughtering with no visceral impact.

(yes my first Kamen Rider was Amazons, which is exactly the two meeting and i enjoyed it at the time (especially the episode that is just The Raid!) but revisiting it is very not my taste)

I like some of the gorier toku stuff but I don't really think of them as more adult or realistic, just exploring a different space than usual. Especially with Rider which has strong horror roots.

Ultimately toku is for the kids and this stuff is just an interesting side dish sometimes, which I think is just how it ought to be.

oh absolutely. i have a weird relationship to Kamen Rider? i like '71, Black and ZO most where they are just dark enough without overshadowing the kids stuff.
but my biggest toku introduction was '70s Godzilla and classic Ultraman so it just never really felt like my a big part of my taste.

I actually watched a couple episodes of Build first (it had just started recently) and said "ok that was pretty good. I think this like a yearly franchise thing? What was last year's show?" and promptly fell face first down the special interest hole. It charmed me by being absolutely ridiculous and 110% sincere about it.
