Is it set into the wall?
Also, that staircase and railing with the plaster walls remind me of the old brownstone I used to live in
it's a loose access panel to some plumbing, the original door that went in that frame has probably been missing for 50 years cause it had some scavenged drywall with a 70s floral wallpaper shoved in there until I replaced that with this
everything in this house is 100 years old except all the weird shit the little old gnome handyman across the street shoved in the walls to cover up a hole of some kind. after we moved in he gave us a little tour and pointed out all the stuff we shouldn't touch cause it's full of asbestos
so it IS just like the brownstone I used to live in!
it's definitely a Type. Probably one of the last houses in the neighborhood that's in more or less original condition, tho, I've watched all our neighbors' places get gutted and replaced with the cheapest contractor-grade drywall and fittings from Home Depot cause that's pretty much what you have to do to bring them up to some semblance of modern building codes.
